On Thursday evening (March 27, 2025), a freight train derailed near Tambaram railway station in India, causing delays to several express trains traveling from Chennai’s Egmore station to Villupuram.
Following the incident, railway repair crews worked urgently to re-rail the derailed wagons and restore normal operations.
A senior official from the Chennai division of Southern Railway stated that the derailment occurred during shunting operations for a freight train transporting automobiles between Tambaram and Sanatorium stations. Three empty wagons derailed as the train slowly exited the shunting line at Sanatorium station toward Tambaram.
Due to the derailment and safety precautions, multiple express trains from Chennai Egmore via Villupuram to various destinations experienced significant delays. Senior railway officials oversaw on-site recovery efforts to resume services promptly.
